Scott & Co – London

Holles Street, Cavendish Square

Scott, Williams & Co – 1824

Moved to 1, Cavendish Square – 1825

Sir Samuel Scott from 1847

Taken over by Parr’s Banking Co & Alliance Bank Ltd - 1894

became Parr’s Bank Ltd - 1896

then London County Westminster & Parr’s Bank Ltd - 1918

became Westminster Bank Ltd –1923 and now NatWest.

This 1880’s example is the earliest cheque we have so far seen from Scotts.  It was a small West End bank but operated for a long period.  Earlier cheques should be around somewhere.  Later transitional cheques are seen, e.g. the takeover by Parr’s, but the one example we have has gone into our archive collection.

Crowe & Co – 1805

Variously known as……

Chelmsford Bank

Essex & Suffolk Bank

Essex Bank

Numerous partnerships all with Sparrow

Formed into Barclays – 1896

A bewildering series of bank titles, partnership names and six separate towns all serve to make the Sparrow banking empire very difficult to grasp.

The Malden Bank example below is previously unseen by us.  Cheques from Sparrow & Co do not seem all that common for such a well established and long lived banking house.  These are both single examples.
