Pass Books

Before the ‘Statement of Account’ there were Pass Books. They provide a wonderful record of continuous use of a bank account over a defined period of time – often very different to present day usage. Branch lists etc. are a bonus. They often chart the changing titles of Banks in exactly the same way as cheques. Pass Books are currently appreciated by a select few – but then so were cheques 10 years ago and banknotes 30 years before that. Great potential!

Navan, 1909. Brown card cover – slightly worn. List of branches + agencies + info page. 2 pages written-up remainder blank.
PB5. Carlisle City & District Banking Co	£16
Carlisle, 1864 to 1867. No info. pages. White card covers – very dirty, clean internally, 6 pages written-up, remainder blank. Early date before ‘Limited’ status.
PB6. Cumberland Union Banking Co Ltd	£20
Carlisle, 1867. Card covers – quite worn. No info. pages, fully written-up for ‘Carlisle Varnish Co’. Scarce early type with blue pages.
PB7. London City & Midland Bank Ltd	£10
Grantham, 1913 to 1916. List of branches + terms of business. Green card covers with gold embossed bank title – slightly worn, fully written-up.
PB8. London Joint Stock Bank Ltd	£10
Carlisle, 1919. Branch list + info page. White covers – marked, DOUBLE TITLE o/printed with “London Joint City & Midland Bank Limited”. 2 pages written-up, remainder blank.

Preston, 1883 to 1886. No info pages. Green card cover – worn + marks, 4 pages written-up and 4 pages blank.
PB10. Manchester & Salford TSB	£8
Branch not stated, 1950 to 1955. Branch list + info pages. Blue cover – worn, within original storage envelope, fully written up.
PB11. National Provincial Bank of England Ltd	£16
208/9, Piccadilly. 1902. List of branches + info. page. White ‘fold over’ calf covers, minor foxing on covers, pristine internally. Four pages written-up, remainder blank.
PB12. North of Scotland Bank Ltd	£10
Elgin, 1930/1931. No branch list, info. page. Dark green card covers, 6 pages written-up, remainder blank. Very clean. Scarcer bank title.
PB13. Westminster Bank Ltd	£12
Ashford, 1926 to 1939. Lists of Directors, constituent banks, London and Provincial Branches + Terms of Business. Black ‘fold over’ leather covers with gold embossed bank title – well used, fully written-up.
PB14. Union of London & Smiths Bank Ltd	£14
Derby, 1905 to 1907. List of branches and constituent banks. Black leather cover – worn., fully written-up.

Condition & Description - Banknotes

Unc = uncirculated….Without visible defects.

EF = extra fine………...Light folds or single clean crease.

VF = very fine………....2 or 3 creases/folds. Minor marks/soiling.

F = fine………………......Multiple creases/folds, some soiling, few pinholes.

VG = very good………..Well circulated, multiple faults, holes but intact.

G = good…………….....…Grubby with limp paper. Pieces missing.

Grading of condition is a subjective art and differences of opinion will sometimes arise. We always try to grade fairly and accurately but make no extravagant claims that we are always right.
We offer an unconditional 10 day return option on all goods and this is the buyer’s final protection if an item does not meet expectations.

Any significant variation from above will be specifically mentioned for individual items.
