The Birmingham private bank of Lloyd & Co was
established in 1765. This private bank converted into a
joint stock limited liability company known as Lloyds
Banking Company Ltd in 1865. Became
Lloyds, Barnetts & Bosenquets Bank Ltd in 1884 and
then Lloyds Bank Ltd in 1889. Currently known as
Lloyds TSB on our High Street with the well known
Black Horse symbol predominant.
|
|
Almost anything before 1900 is difficult to find. We
have nothing to offer from the first two Bank titles.
As a general rule Order cheques are red and Bearer
cheques are blue, with the latter being much less
frequently seen. The Black Horse symbol, introduced on
cheques in 1890’s, comes in at least six types as
illustrated below. Type A is found mainly (perhaps
only) on cheques from the Lombard Street Branch; Type B
is found on a limited range of pre-1920 cheques; Type C
has so far only been seen from Margate (1904) and
Broadstairs (1913); Type D, Type E and Type F are found
on cheques from a wide range of locations. Cheques
without the Black Horse symbol will usually have some
other symbol that indicates a local and previously
amalgamated bank. Many of these other types will have
had relatively limited use. A collection with ‘one of
each’ of the six Black Horse symbols plus a selection of
the local alternative symbols where used is achievable
but quite a challenge.

With
just 50 or so items listed below this is our most
restricted listing of any of the ‘Big Five’ banks. This
suggests that Lloyds Bank might be a more difficult
collecting area than is generally appreciated. |
