Compiled by Roger Outing

Over 300 different banks have been established in London since the Goldsmith-Bankers commenced their operations in the 17th Century. What follows is a listing, in date, establishment order, of those Banks. This is perhaps the most comprehensive single list that has been published.
Some of these Banks are long forgotten. Others are household names.  A few still trade from the same London premises as they did 200 years ago.  Collectively they have played a major role in the development of the modern commercial world.  They deserve to be remembered.
Please note that Merchants Banks (Rothchilds, Barings, etc), Discount Houses (Alexanders etc) and Overseas Banks based in London are not included in this listing.  Their story belongs elsewhere.

The list is split into three parts:

  • London Banks Established Before 1699.

  • London Banks Established Between 1700 and 1799.

  • London Banks Established After 1800.
