The
list below gives the first half dozen reports of new cheques
not yet included in the Barclays catalogue. It is
noticeable that it is the early overprinted varieties that
predominate but this is only to be expected. |
|
|
|
Many
of these new reports might logically be predicted to have
existed but it is emphasised that we cannot make an entry in
the catalogue until we have actual confirmation of a
cheque. We do not make a catalogue entry on the basis of
anecdotal reports – no matter how well founded they are. We
prefer to handle the actual cheque or at the very least a
scan or photocopy from a reliable source. |

|
1. Gurneys, Birkbeck,
Barclay, Buxton & Orde
Barclays
Catalogue currently lists two varieties of this type of
cheque from Great Yarmouth – printed in blue or purple (Nos.
9.1 & 9.2.) |
|
|
|
We now
have an example from South Lowestoft – printed in green.
See Fig. 1. Waterlow & Sons printed this example, as they
did the two varieties already listed. This new entry is
provisionally numbered as 9.4 and has a market valuation of
£16. (Thanks to M.V. for this report). |
|
|
|
2.
Molineux, Whitfield & Co
Molineux,
Whitfeld & Co is currently listed as “Not yet Confirmed” in
the Barclays Catalogue. This can be changed as we now have
an entry for No. 12.1 that is illustrated at Fig. 2.
Printer is Waterlow & Sons and market valuation is £25.
Design is very similar to corporate style Barclays cheques. |
|
|
|
3. Bolitho, Williams,
Foster, Goode, Grylls & Co
Bolitho
& Co were taken over in 1905 but their cheques with “Barclay
“Co Ltd” title had not previously been reported. Fig. 3 now
remedies this situation with a nice example from Fowey
printed in purple by Charles Skipper & East.
Provisionally numbered 26.1 with a market valuation of £26. |
|
|
|
4. Woods & Co
Woods
& Co were taken over in 1897 and we now have an example of a
“Barclay & Co Ltd” overprint at Fig. 4. Printed in green by
Barclays Patent Indelible. Provisionally numbered 27.1 with
a market valuation of £30. (Thanks to MV for supplying this
example). |
|
|
|
5. Backhouses
Shown
at Fig. 5 is a type No. 61 with “Backhouses Bank” within
circle at left. This has the plain Bank title with
Branch name in narrow print. Printed by Barclay &
Fry Ltd – as are the others of this type. It was a
reasonably prediction that this variety would exist but this
is the first confirmation. Provisionally numbered as 61.5
with a market valuation of £6. (Thanks to HP for this
example) |
|
|
|
6. Veasey, Desborough
& Co
Fig.
6 confirms another predictable variety for type 61 this time
from Veasey & Desborough with the stags head and hunting
scene at left. Again the plain bank title with
Branch name in narrow print. Printed by Barclay &
Fry as usual for the type. Provisionally numbered 61.6 with
a market valuation of £7. (Thanks to F.W. of Leeds for
selling this item to Banknotes4u) |
